"Oddball" Sherman

(from the film Kellys Heros)

Photo's kindly provided by Peter Symonds of Nottingham.

I love the movie "Kelly's Heroes"its a great story, a balance of blackhumour and action,

superb cast and attention to detailmake it a classic film.

It was one of the first movies to show the Germans weren't all evil nazis and that the

allies weren't exactly heroes. Best of all it had amazing attention to detail using plenty of real

Shermans and three superb replica Tiger 1's.

By far my favourite character is Donald Sutherland as "Oddball" with his three decayed

Sherman tanks covered in junk. filth and rust. I have wanted to copy this tank for a while

and have now finally done it.

The Sherman is a Tamiya full option model heavily modified from an M4 105 Howitzer to

M4A3 75 spec with VSSS suspension and engine grills from Imperial Modebau, with scratch

built exhaust deflectors with a 75mm mantlet and a spare gun barrel from my T34/76.

An Imperial Oddball figure tops it of with loads of stowage finish the tank off nicely.

DID YOU KNOW

The fearsome MG42 German Machine Gun capable of firing 1200 rounds per minute which was unheard of at that time, also known by the Americans as "Hitlers Buzz-Saw" who feared it as the sound was just like material ripping when it fired.

Over 400,000 units were made in 6 years also know as the "Spandau" from stamping marks on the weapons parts which was a suburb of Berlin where some were manufactured.

German Forces still use a close variant of this weapon still also some third world countries have adopted this weapon, as the weapon is accurate, reliable, easy to strip, clean and change the barrel in combat.

One of the Japanese armies methods of destroying tanks was to plant a man in a hole with an artillery shell with the nose exposed. When the tank came near the soldier he would whack the shell with a hammer. "Lack of weapons is no excuse for defeat." - Lt. Gen. Mataguchi.
